About the Creole Classic
The idea of a fishing tournament came about 32 years ago when several fisherman who had camps at the BBY Marina in Leeville were sitting around one afternoon drinking beer (who says drinking beer destroys brain cells)and decided that a competition among themselves and anyone else who wanted to fish, sounded like the makings for a fun week-end. The name Creole Classic was decided upon, and the rest is history!
It's first chairman was Bobby "BBY" Bourg and for the first few years was held at his marina which bears his name. Bobby "BBY" Bourg, the person who established the rodeo in 1984, and served as chairman for many years, has passed away.
The first tournament had 32 registered fisherman. After 3 years, in 1987, the popularity of the Creole Classic caused its headquarters to be moved to Bridgeside Marina in Grand Isle.
The Creole Classic fishing tournament has evolved into one 1 of the "Premier" fishing tournaments on the island, drawing thousands of fishing enthusiasts and those who come for the "Party" to the island each June.
The concept of the rodeo has never changed since its first year. A "fun" family oriented tournament whose funds are donated to worthy charities.
"New Blood" coming into the board of directors as new members, has increased the enthusiasm and "Idea Pool" which promises to keep the Creole Classic a viable rodeo for many years to come.

Creole Classic Fishing Tournament and Restore or Retreat Team to Raise Awareness for Coastal Restoration
The Creole Classic Fishing Tournament, a fishing rodeo held every June in Grand Isle, LA, and Restore or Retreat, a local non-profit coastal advocacy group, have joined forces through a strategic partnership to utilize the area’s premier fishing rodeo to rally support for saving our Sportsman’s Paradise by restoring Louisiana’s rapidly eroding coastline.
The fishing tournament, started in 1984, is a well-known supporter of local charities, and will continue to grow that philanthropy by promoting and supporting Restore or Retreat’s own mission of identifying and expediting the implementation of aggressive, large-scale restoration projects to protect this irreplaceable region.
The events surrounding the fishing rodeo will provide the same great time that Creole Classic participants have grown to expect, and the partnership with ROR will go a step further to ensure families that participate have fun, kid and family friendly educational opportunities to raise awareness about Louisiana’s land loss and the proposed solutions.
Executive Director of Restore or Retreat, Simone Maloz, said of the partnership: “We know the participants of the Creole Classic Rodeo already enjoy Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise. Our partnership with the rodeo provides ROR with an excellent opportunity for us to interact oneon- one with all those who love Louisiana’s natural resources—big and small-- about what they can do to make sure it doesn’t become a vanishing paradise. And what better place to have a rodeo than Grand Isle, which is right next door to the recently completed Caminada Headland and Shoreline project, one of the biggest restoration projects to date.”
Chairman of the Creole Classic, Benton LeBlanc, said of the partnership: “The entire board of directors of the Creole Classic Fishing Tournament is very excited to welcome the Restore or Retreat team to our rodeo, and to move forward in our combined goal of raising money for our existing charities while spreading awareness about the problems that our coast faces along with the efforts being put in place to restore it. We’re equally excited about being able to provide a few new experiences during the rodeo weekend that would be impossible to bring to our participants and their families without this partnership.”
The committee members would like to invite ya'll to our annual Fishing Tournament. As always our event is family oriented, full of fun, and open to anyone wishing to participate. Your participation and sponsorship is greatly appreciated and welcome.
